Getting started

How to prepare for your first online English lesson

Your first lesson is about getting to know your teacher and showing them your level. A little preparation makes it much more useful.

Before the lesson

  • Check your internet, camera and microphone. Headphones help you hear clearly.
  • Find a quiet place.
  • Install or open the video tool your teacher uses and test it.
  • Have a notebook or a document ready for new words.

Know your goal

Write one or two sentences: why you are learning English and what you want to do better in a few months. Your teacher will use this to plan lessons.

During the lesson

  • Don't worry about mistakes. Your teacher needs to hear them.
  • Ask the teacher to type corrections and new words in the chat.
  • Say if they speak too fast.

Questions to ask your teacher

  • What level do you think I am?
  • What should we focus on first?
  • How often should I have lessons?
  • What can I practise between lessons?
