IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL or Eiken: which English test do you need?
Many learners in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam study English for a test. The right test depends on why you need it. Always check the exact test and score required by your school, employer or visa office.
IELTS
Often used for studying abroad, work and migration, especially in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It tests listening, reading, writing and speaking, and the speaking test is a conversation with an examiner. Learners in Vietnam and Hong Kong often prepare for it for overseas study.
TOEIC
A test of workplace English. Many employers in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam ask for a TOEIC score when hiring or promoting staff.
TOEFL
Mostly used for university admission, especially in the United States.
Eiken (英検)
A Japanese English test with grades from beginner to advanced. Many school students in Japan take it, and some schools and universities consider it in admissions.
Local tests
Some places have their own tests too, such as the GEPT in Taiwan. Ask your school which one they accept.
